Rebirth

The ocean stretched before me
its thundering waves beckoning
alone
I charged into it’s vastness
the icy water stabbed at my flesh
my body instantly consumed
by an unstoppable rolling wall of water
the undertow spirited my husk away
the freezing water pierced my core
the sea salt a cleansing agent
traumatised muscles reacted involuntary
contracting contorting creating catalyst
a metamorphous began
the frigid womb
replaced months with moments
I surfaced and gasped clean air
acting on instinct alone
my thrashing limbs brought me to shore
the man that entered the ocean
lost fear and doubt
the man that emerged
gained hope and self worth
together
they left one set of footprints
